Core Group

Purpose of the core group:

In order to permit the HIRLAM management group (HMG) to address high-priority research issues or urgent model problems effectively, and to better support the development of the Reference system, the HIRLAM services allocate dedicated staff resources, to work under the direct authority of the HMG: the so-called core group. During HIRLAM-C, the 7 larger HIRLAM NMS (AEMET, DMI, FMI, KNMI, MetEireann, Met Norway, SMHI) each have committed themselves to make available from their staff 1 fte/year to this core group, to work on priority tasks identified and assigned by the HMG.

Responsibilities of core group members:

Depending on the core group members’ personal expertise, activities assigned to core group members may be related to high-priority novel developments, but also to ensuring and enhancing the quality of the already developed NWP system. One task which can be expected from all core group members is participation in verification experiments and evaluation of new reference model versions, or components therein. They may also be involved in the assessment and handling of urgent scientific and technical problems that turn up in the Reference system. Core group members work either full time or half-time for the HIRLAM programme and their activities are managed directly by the HMG. They will report directly to a designated HMG member who will assign them to specific activities.

Core group positions are filled on a yearly basis, in agreement between the head of research (or equivalent) in each institute and the HIRLAM programme manager. Appointments in principle run for one year at a time, but can be renewed from year to year. Core group staff may either be assigned directly by their service, or, if a service cannot supply a full time person or two half-time persons, core group members may be hired at other services instead.
