I'm assessing the impact of ASCAT observations assimilation on Hirlam.
I intended to use the vobs files which are created by
/home/ms/dk/nhz/harmonie_release/trunk/util/gl/prg/obsextr.f
on ECMWF. A program you, Nils, have developed in the previous century.

As the largest impact of ASCAT assimilation is expected over sea
I planned to use the VOBS output for moored buoys.
Unfortunately I fail to ensure that the moored buoys information
is appearing in the output files created by obsextr.f .

I incorporated the moored buoys into the allsynops.list which is copied by a
VER_create_obs script to the required synop.list for rdsynoplist routine.
This did not lead to the desired result : Vobs files containing moored buoys.
I've included the VER_create_obs at the end of this mail.

I assume that I overlook something basic, but I cannot find it.
I couldn't find information on this on the Hirlam Twiki page.
Only that there are several modifications since 2007 to which Ulf
contributed. That is why I'm also addressing Ulf.

Could you share some wisdom on how to get sea surface data into the vobs files?

Paul,

The decoding from BUFR is done in verobs.F The code is written to extract data from SYNOP and TEMP, but I don't know the BUFR codes for the type of observations you are using. You have to create your own version of the code and modify the extraction yourself.

Dear Ulf

You were right. I needed to change Verobs.F to accomodate seasurface observations. This took a while as I'm not a bufr expert.
Thanks for your advice.
